Scope and Content View from south-east of Castle Sween, Knapdale, Argyll and Bute Castle Sween, Scotland's oldest standing castle, was built to defend Knapdale in the 12th century and modified in the 14th and 15th centuries. Garrisoned for the Parliament in the 1640s, it was captured and burnt by Royalists and then abandoned. Castle Sween's location affords an excellent view of Loch Sween and, further to the west, Jura Sound and Jura itself, providing close control of these important sea-ways. Until well into the 18th century, Argyll's sea-lanes were more strategically important than its roads. Most trade went by boat, and it was easier to sail on the sea lochs than to march through the mountainous interior where robbery and ambush were common. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
