Scope and Content View showing base of north-east angle tower, Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe, Argyll and Bute Kilchurn Castle was founded before 1449 by Sir Colin Campbell on land given to him by his father in 1432. The Campbells of Glenorchy continued to maintain and develop Kilchurn until the late 18th century when it was struck by lightning and fell into ruin. The NE angle tower is founded upon a high base-plinth of rubble masonry (the slightly broader masonry work). The elliptical-mouthed opening is a gun-loop, found at regular intervals between windows, designed to protect the defenders when firing muskets. John Campbell, 1st Earl of Breadalbane, constructed barracks between 1690-8 in response to the Highland War of 1689. A Government force occupied Kilchurn during the Jacobite rising of 1715 as Lord Breadalbane aided both Jacobite and Hanoverian causes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
