Scope and Content Engraving showing Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe, Argyll and Bute Kilchurn Castle was founded before 1449 by Sir Colin Campbell on land given to him by his father in 1432. The Campbells of Glenorchy continued to maintain and develop Kilchurn until the late 18th century when it was struck by lightning and fell into ruin. Built upon a low peninsula projecting into Loch Awe, Kilchurn Castle commands an extensive view over the upper portion of Loch Awe, Glen Strae and into the Strath of Orchy. When the waters of the loch are high, the site is completely isolated. Stone tower-houses were popular, especially in lawless regions, from the 14th to the 17th century. They were cheap compared to a larger castle because they were secure against the everyday danger of armed raiders and thieves, but not against artillery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
