Description Dunstaffnage Chapel, interior. General view of chancel and possible font from West.

Catalogue Number SC 366633

Copy of A 77297

Scope and Content Chancel of Dunstaffnage Chapel, near Dunstaffnage Castle, at the mouth of Loch Etive, Argyll Dunstaffnage Chapel's original architectural details date it to 1225-50. The burial aisle was added in 1740 when the main building was already ruinous. This was for the use of the Campbells of Dunstaffnage, hereditary Captains of Dunstaffnage castle. This shows the east end of the chancel which would have been separated from the nave by a rood-screen running from just before the door (right). The east window which would have lit the altar, now looks out onto the later Campbell burial aisle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
