Scope and Content Watercolour showing courtyard of Dunstaffnage Castle, Loch Etive, Argyll and Bute Dunstaffnage Castle was built before 1275 by the MacDougall Lords of Lorn and taken from them by Robert Bruce after a battle and a siege around 1309. The first Campbell Earl of Argyll became custodian in 1321-2. One of a series of watercolours of Dunstaffnage Castle painted by W F Lyon, this painting shows the south-west corner of the castle courtyard. Whilst Lyon shows the castle as a ruin, restoration work by Historic Scotland has been in progress since 1962. Until well into the 18th century, Argyll's sea-lanes were more strategically important than its roads. Most trade went by boat, and it was easier to sail on the sea lochs than to march through the mountainous interior where robbery and ambush were common. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
