Scope and Content 1778 sketch of Dunstaffnage Castle across Loch Etive, Argyll Because of its strategic position, Dunstaffnage Castle was a government base during both Jacobite Rebellions. Flora MacDonald was briefly held there in 1746 after she was arrested for aiding Prince Charles Edward Stewart's (Bonnie Prince Charlie or Charles Edward Stuart) escape after the Battle of Culloden. This drawing shows the castle much as Flora MacDonald would have seen it in the mid 18th-century. The roof of the gatehouse (right) has not yet been destroyed by fire, and the battlements are still crenellated. The Isle of Mull looms in the background. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
