Scope and Content 19th century view of the courtyard, Dunstaffnage Castle, Loch Etive, Argyll and Bute Dunstaffnage Castle was built before 1275 by the MacDougall Lords of Lorn and taken from them by Robert Bruce after a battle and a siege around 1309. The first Campbell Earl of Argyll became custodian in 1321-2. The square structure with four columns is a post-18th-century wellhead. To its left is the 1725 dwelling-house, backing on to the 13th-century walls. In the far corner is the north tower, the residence of the keeper or castellan. Until a fire in 1810 gutted the gatehouse, Dunstaffnage was the principal residence of the hereditary captains who held it for the Campbell Earls of Argyll. Their tenants remained in occupation until the end of the 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
