Scope and Content Elevated view of Dunstaffnage Castle and Firth of Lorn, Loch Etive, Argyll Dunstaffnage Castle was built before 1275 by the MacDougall lords of Lorn and taken from them by Robert Bruce after a battle and a siege around 1309. The first Campbell Earl of Argyll became custodian in 1321-2. This late 19th-century photograph shows how the castle guards the narrow entrance (right) to Loch Etive and also the Firth of Lorn (background). Until well into the 18th century, Argyll's sea-lanes were more strategically important than its roads. Most trade went by boat, and it was easier to sail on the sea lochs than to march through the mountainous interior where armies were easily ambushed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
