Scope and Content Architectural fragment from Iona Abbey, Argyll and Bute The Benedictine abbey at Iona was built around AD 1200 on the site of St Columba's earlier monastery. It was altered and partly rebuilt in the 13th century and again in the 15th century. It became derelict after the Reformation of 1560. This stone is a capital of a nook-shaft (a shaft set into a recess in the wall). The scalloped moulding on it is well preserved. It is similar to other capitals, still in situ, in the early north arch of the crossing in the church. During the excavation, restoration and rebuilding of the Abbey, numerous architectural fragments were unearthed. Some of these were reused in the rebuilding.
