Scope and Content South transept at Iona Abbey, Argyll and Bute The Benedictine abbey at Iona was built around AD 1200 on the site of St Columba's earlier monastery. It was altered and partly rebuilt in the 13th century and again in the 15th century. It became derelict after the Reformation of 1560. This consecration-cross is on the S respond of the arch that lead from the transept to the S choir-aisle to the E. It is carved in false-relief and is very well preserved. The S transept is entirely 15th-century in date, apart from the little restoration done in 1904. The tracery of the S window was also replaced in 1875. Work on the W wall may have been hurried as it lacks the elaborate external base-course seen elsewhere. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
