Scope and Content North transept at Iona Abbey, Argyll and Bute The Benedictine abbey at Iona was built around AD 1200 on the site of St Columba's earlier monastery. It was altered and partly rebuilt in the 13th century and again in the 15th century. It became derelict after the Reformation of 1560. This is the interior of the E wall of the church's N transept. This short arcade consists of three round-headed arches. The central arch is just a niche, but the other two lead to a pair of small chapels or alter-stances. The N transept is one of the oldest parts of the church still standing. Along with short sections of the N wall of the nave and choir, it belongs to the original Benedictine abbey from around 1200 AD. It was restored between 1902 and 1904.
