Scope and Content View from south-east showing Castle Sween and Loch Sween, Argyll and Bute Castle Sween dates from c.1200 with additions in the early 13th to 17th centuries. Garrisoned in the 1640s, it became ruinous soon after. It has been repaired since being placed in the care of the Office of Works (now Historic Scotland) in 1933. This shows the setting of the castle, on the east shore of Loch Sween. Its position on the summit of a rocky ridge provides excellent views of the loch and out to the island of Jura. To the north-west of the castle is a boat-landing in a small inlet. The north-east tower (to the right) of the castle is known as MacMillan's Tower, probably named after Alexander MacMillan who was keeper of the castle for the Lord of the Isles from c.1472.
