Scope and Content Graveslab of John Beaton, Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This graveslab was formerly in Reilig Odhrain, and can be seen in the Abbey Museum. It features an oval armorial medallion, carved in false-relief. This features a marlot, two sets of three cushions and three boars' heads. Below is foliage decoration. Inscriptions read 'Here lies John Beaton, physician of the MacLean family, who died 19 November 1657 aged 63. Donald Beaton made me, 1674', and 'Behold, he who had so often freed others from their ills falls to the conquering dart of overpowering death'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
