Scope and Content Michael Chapel, Iona Abbey, Argyll and Bute The Benedictine abbey at Iona was built around AD 1200 on the site of St Columba's earlier monastery. It was altered and partly rebuilt in the 13th century and again in the 15th century. It became derelict after the Reformation of 1560. This view shows the interior of the ruined chapel in around 1938. Most of the shell of the chapel was still standing, having been consolidated in 1875. The east gable, in the centre of the image, probably collapsed in the late 18th century. The 'Michael Chapel' is a free-standing chapel to the east of the east range. It was given the name after 1959, but there are records of chapel dedicated to St Michael in the 16th century. It was partly restored in 1875 and fully in 1959. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
