Scope and Content View from north-west showing interior of flying-boat hangar at former seaplane base, Stannergate, Dundee, Tayside A seaplane base consisting of two hangars and a slipway was established near Dundee's harbour by the Royal Navy Air Service in 1914. It is one of several east coast bases set up for carrying out reconnaissance and anti-submarine operations in World War I. This F-type hangar was erected c.1918, along with a second slipway. Composed of a metal structural frame, seen here, its roof and walls were clad with corrugated asbestos. The base closed between 1919 and 1940, when it was reopened for service in World War II. After the war, the hangar was used by a food packaging company and as an engineering workshop. It was demolished in 1986. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
