Description Detail of joint between main prop and strut of trestle of Aultnaslanach viaduct which carries the Aviemore to Inverness railway line. It was opened by the Highland Railway Company in 1897 and is the only surviving wooden main-line railway viaduct in Scotland.

Scope and Content Outer upright and stiffening beam joints in central bay of Aultnaslanach Railway Viaduct, Inverness-shire Aultnaslanach Railway Viaduct carries the Aviemore to Inverness railway line which was opened by the Highland Railway Company in 1897. It is the only surviving wooden main-line railway viaduct in Scotland. Notches in the stiffening beam and the upright make a half-lap joint. This is secured by box-brackets and base-plates. The strut fits into the obtuse angle between the upright and the beam and is held in place by a strap-plate bolted to a filler-piece. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
