Description Detail of underside showing construction.

Catalogue Number SC 361841

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of A 57538

Scope and Content Detail of underside of Duchess Bridge, Langholm, Dumfries and Galloway Duchess Bridge in Langholm was built in 1813 by William Kerr junior, and is probably the oldest surviving cast-iron bridge in Scotland. This shows the construction of the bridge from below. The bridge is made up of two parallel cast iron arches, or arch-ribs, which are braced by transverse ribs. The railings of the bridge and the iron scrolls attaching them to the rest of the structure are probably original. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
