Scope and Content View from north-west showing Broomhill Bridge, Highland There was a renaissance in the construction of wooden bridges in the late 19th century, the date of this bridge, although it is not clear why this should have happened. This bridge at Broomhill is considered to be the finest of only four surviving examples of wooden bridges. Built in 1894 by the engineer John A Mackenzie, the bridge is of timber trestle construction, and consists of 15 spans. Five of the spans over the river have been reinforced by the addition of triangulated trusses above the parapet. This would have provided extra strength to the bridge.
