Scope and Content Temporary camps at Girvan Mains, South Ayrshire The Roman temporary camps at Girvan Mains were discovered by aerial survey in 1976 and 77, and trenching done in 1977 confirmed their presence. The camps were built on level ground on the N side of the Girvan Water. It is now only possible to see the remains of the camps as cropmarks. Only one side and a corner are known from the smaller camp, but most of the larger camp has now been recorded. Both were surrounded by V-shaped ditches. The site has been excavated several times due to pipelines and sewage works being built in the area. Notable finds include fragments of a late 1st century glass vessel, and it is possible that the camp was used in Agricola's campaigns. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
