Copy of AGD 9/21

Scope and Content Profile of mouldings from jambs of ground-floor fireplace of east range of Dunstaffnage Castle, at the mouth of Loch Etive, Argyll Because of its strategic position, Dunstaffnage Castle was a government base during both Jacobite Rebellions. Flora MacDonald was briefly held there in 1746 after she was arrested for aiding Charles Edward Stewart's (Bonnie Prince Charlie or Prince Charles Edward Stuart) escape after the Battle of Culloden. The east range's ground-floor fireplace was constructed around 1740, probably using masonry from the castle and nearby chapel. James IV dispossessed the last of the semi-independent - or from the king's perspective, rebellious - MacDonald Lords of the Isles in 1493. The king granted their lands to the Campbell Earl of Argyll who he trusted to control the west coast of Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
