Scope and Content Second-floor plan north tower of Dunstaffnage Castle, at the mouth of Loch Etive, Argyll Dunstaffnage Castle passed to the Campbell Earls of Argyll in 1469-70 and was held for them by hereditary Captains, their kinsmen, the Campbells of Dunstaffnage. The castle was a pro-government stronghold until the 9th Earl's failed rebellion in 1685. The north tower belonged to the castellan or keeper of the castle. The Campbell Earls of Argyll were built up by the Stewart kings of Scotland in order to undermine, and then replace, the local power of the MacDonald Lords of the Isles who were finally dispossessed in 1493.
