Scope and Content Interior of west wing of Castle Sween, Knapdale, Argyll Sween Castle passed to the Stewart Earls of Menteith in 1262. In the Wars of Independence it was held by Sir John Menteith and John MacDougall of Lorn against the MacDonald Lords of the Isles and the original owners, the MacSweens. The west wing was almost entirely rebuilt by John Menteith during the Wars of Independence, probably around 1300. The different stonework at the lower level belongs to an earlier MacSween building. John Stewart of Menteith fought against Edward I, but switched sides after the general surrender of 1304, overseeing Wallace's capture. Finally he joined Robert the Bruce who had allied with his MacDonald enemies, and defeated his MacDougall allies. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
