Scope and Content Inside of main gate of Castle Sween, Knapdale, Argyll Castle Sween, Scotland's oldest standing castle, was built to defend Knapdale in the 12th century and modified in the 14th and 15th centuries. Garrisoned for the Parliament in 1640s, it was captured and burnt by Royalists and then abandoned. Originally, the steps leading to the south ramparts were unenclosed. However, in the 15th century they were absorbed by the new east range and the lower levels were blocked. Before 1250, castles usually had a wooden hall for feasts and public occasions, and a separate two-storeyed stone chamber-block for the lord's family. After 1250, it became fashionable to build the two side-by-side in a single block. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
