Scope and Content Aerial view of a Roman road at Wester Drumatherty, Perth and Kinross About 600m west of Wester Drumatherty steading are the cropmarks of the junction of two Roman roads heading for the fortress at Inchtuthil. A series of quarry-pits running across this aerial photograph marks the lines of the Roman roads. In the bottom right corner, a group of crescent-shaped marks represents a prehistoric unenclosed settlement, probably comprising several timber round-houses. In Scotland, roads were built by the Romans to link their forts and allow rapid movement of soldiers. Built by soldiers, a Roman road typically consisted of a layer of large cobbles topped with a tightly packed layer of small stones and gravel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
