Description General view of interior of house on North West side of courtyard Pl. 58A

Catalogue Number SC 359683

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of AG 4738

Scope and Content Interior of dwelling-house at Dunstaffnage Castle, at the mouth of Loch Etive, Argyll Because of its strategic position, Dunstaffnage Castle was a government base during both Jacobite Rebellions. Flora MacDonald was briefly held there in 1746 after she was arrested for aiding Charles Edward Stewart's (Bonnie Prince Charlie or Prince Charles Edward Stuart) escape after the Battle of Culloden. In 1725, the earlier two-storeyed range which contained the kitchen was rebuilt into a dwelling-house, with access to the first floor via a forestair. The 16th-century fireplace (far end) was incorporated into the new building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
