Scope and Content View of interior of north-east range of Kilchurn Castle from the south Kilchurn Castle was founded before 1449 by Sir Colin Campbell on land given to him by his father in 1432. It was a government base during both 18th century Jacobite risings. It was also garrisoned by the Earl of Breadalbane after the 1689 Highland War. The original castle consisted of a small enclosure, or barmkin, entered through the ground-floor cellar of the tower-house. There was a small postern gate next to the laich (low) hall, an alternative to the usual first-floor hall for dining and feasting. From the 14th century onwards, tower-houses were built either as 'private lodgings' for the laird's own use within a larger castle complex, or as relatively self-contained fortified residences.
