Description General view of courtyard from East Pl. 73B

Catalogue Number SC 359601

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of AG 3787

Scope and Content West corner of courtyard from tower-house of Kilchurn Castle on the banks of Loch Awe, Glenorchy, Argyll Kilchurn Castle was founded before 1449 by Sir Colin Campbell on land given to him by his father in 1432. It was the base of the Campbells of Glenorchy until the 17th century when, as Earls of Breadalbane, they acquired grander castles elsewhere. On the left, the lower levels of the south wall contains traces of the mid-15th-century laich (or low) hall for servants and lesser retainers. On the right is the south-west end of the late 17th-century north-west range of barrack-rooms. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
