Scope and Content North-east corner of Kilchurn Castle on the banks of Loch Awe, Glenorchy, Argyll Kilchurn Castle was a government base in 1654 when it resisted a Royalist siege, in 1685 during the Earl of Argyll's revolt, and during both Jacobite risings. It was also garrisoned by the Earl of Breadalbane's private army after the 1689 Highland War. The tower-house (left) belongs to the mid-15th-century, but the north-east and north-west ranges (right) were built in the 1690s to accommodate about 200 of the laird's men. This is possibly the earliest surviving barrack-block in Britain. The 1689 Highland War was waged on behalf of James II by 'Bonny' Dundee - John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount Dundee. His Highlanders swept away General Mackay's government troops at Killiecrankie, but Dundee was killed and the army soon dispersed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
