SC 358860

Description Details of water-powered beam engine.

Catalogue Number SC 358860

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 10662

Scope and Content Detail drawing of pump-rod crosshead of water-powered beam-engine at Straitsteps Lead Mine, Wanlockhead, Dumfrieshire This water-powered beam-engine probably dates from the late 19th-century, but is the best surviving example of a type of engine in use from the 18th century to pump water out of mineworkings. It was powered by water from a cistern on the hillside above. The pump-spear moved up and down vertically in one spot. This was achieved by a stirrup-like arrangement of hinged link-rods.
