Scope and Content Water-powered beam-engine at Straitsteps Lead Mine, Wanlockhead, Dumfrieshire This water-powered beam-engine probably dates from the late 19th-century, but is the best surviving example of a type of engine in use from the 18th century to pump water out of mineworkings. It was powered by water from a cistern on the hillside above. Water from the cistern filled the bucket at the nearest end of the beam. The weight tilted the beam, lifting the wooden rod or 'pump spear'. Next, a simple valve opened, releasing the water so that the bucket end rose, forcing the spear downwards.
