Scope and Content View of boiler and horizontal gas engine in marble quarry, Rubha na Carraig Géire, Iona Marble can be found at several sites on Iona, but the main quarry is on the south-east coast at Rubha na Carraig Géire. A vertical band of white stone with yellow-green streaks, which measures about 7m wide, extends inland for about 100m. A few items remain from when the quarry was in use, such as a storehouse from the 1790s, and a quarrymen's shelter from the early 20th century. There are also pieces of equipment, like this boiler and gas engine which powered the marble-cutting tools. Quarrying appears to have been started on Iona as early as 1693. Further quarrying activity took place c.1790, but work was abandoned due to transport difficulties. Work started again about 1907 which continued until just after the start of World War I.
