Scope and Content View from north-west of Broomhill Bridge, Inverness-shire The early 19th century saw the first use of cast-iron in constructing bridges in Scotland. However, there was something of a renaissance in wooden bridges in the late 19th century, although it is not clear why this should happen. This bridge at Broomhill is considered to be the finest of only four surviving examples. Built in 1894 by the engineer John A Mackenzie, the bridge is of timber trestle construction, and consists of 15 spans. As this view shows, five of the spans over the river have been reinforced by the addition of triangulated trusses above the parapet. This would have provided extra strength to the bridge.
