Scope and Content Interior view showing cloth-changing operation on a beetling machine at Avonbank Bleachworks, Larkhall Avonbank Bleach and Dyeworks was founded in 1839 on the site of an earlier distillery. In 1865 it passed to D C Miller and Company, who were responsible for the manufacture of 'Scotch Holland' dust-repellent cotton roller blinds from Lancashire cotton. Cotton cloth for these Scotch Holland' blinds was singed to remove hair and fluff, washed and bleached or dyed, and then sized and dried. Finally, it was passed through a beetling machine, which hammered it to produce the dust repellent sheen. D C Miller and Company owned the bleachworks until it was demolished in the 1980s.
