Copy of ED 10526

Scope and Content Plan of remains of Edinburgh and Leith Gasworks, City of Edinburgh Leith Gasworks was begun around 1840 and developed continuously until the end of the 19th century. In the original plant (buildings marked with 'I'), gas was produced by heating coal-tar in the Retort House. It was then cooled and cleaned in the now-missing Purifying Plant (top right), before being stored in the gasometer house. Coal-gas was first piped to customers from a central gasworks in London in 1812. Despite its fumes, gas soon replaced oil for commercial lighting because it allowed longer working hours and gaslit buildings were safer and cheaper to insure. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
