Description View of main entrance steps from South East

Scope and Content View from south-east showing main entrance steps to Rowallan Castle, East Ayrshire Rowallan Castle lies 2km north of Kilmarnock overlooking Carmel Water. This L-plan house was built c.1560, and was extended and altered in the 17th century to enclose a central courtyard. It was restored in the 1980s and is now open to the public. This shows the main entrance front of the castle. Reached by a flight of stone steps, the entrance doorway is flanked by twin four-storeyed drum towers, which are reminiscent of those at Falkland Palace and Stirling Castle. Just north-east of the castle are the remains of its predecessor, which was probably built in the 13th century. In 1901, Robert Lorimer designed a new mansion house in a Scots baronial style, c.1km to the north-west of the 16th-century castle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
