Scope and Content Transverse section of Engine Works, Fairfield Shipbuilding Yard, Govan, City of Glasgow The Engine Works was constructed after 1869 to when the firm moved from a smaller yard at Centre Street to Fairfield Shipbuilding Yard. It was an improvement on other contemporary works both in its scale, and in the rationality of its design. Behind a restrained classical facade are four machine-halls. The structure is supported by iron stanchions with two stages of struts and iron strainer-beams (C,D). Originally, each aisle had two galleries (G) whose uses included a school for apprentices.
