Scope and Content Drawing of stanchion base in machine hall in Engine Works, Fairfield Shipbuilding Yard, Govan, City of Glasgow The Engine Works was constructed after 1869 to when the firm moved from a smaller yard at Centre Street to Fairfield Shipbuilding Yard. It was an improvement on other contemporary works both in its scale, and in the rationality of its design. The iron stanchions support the whole structure of the building. Anchor bolts attach them to pyramid shaped 'pad foundations'. The base of a bracing-strut is visible at the top of the drawing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
