Scope and Content Diagram of beam-engine in Garlogie Mill, Garlogie, Grampian This mid 19th-century beam-engine is virtually intact and is the only Scottish example of its type still in its original position. It is a house-built rotative beam-engine of medium size, with a double-acting cylinder, separate condenser and air pump. Steam is piped (A) from the boiler to the cylinder (D). It lifts the piston rod (P), tilts the beam (N), and so turns the flywheel (Y) to send power via a bearing (Z) to the factory. The condensed steam mixed with cold water is pumped back to the boiler.
