Scope and Content View of Town House, Sandhaven, Culross, Fife Culross became a burgh of barony under the Abbot of Culross in 1490, and was made a royal burgh in 1592. The Cistercian monastery had been founded at Culross by Malcolm, Earl of Fife, in the 13th century. Built in 1626, this two-storeyed town house originally had a garret (attic) storey with dormer windows. These were removed when the bell- and clock-tower was added in 1783 along with the two-way forestair leading to the first floor. The town house was the meeting place of the Town Council and Burgh Court, usually with a prison, and burghers paid their taxes here. Standard weights and measures used for trade were held here and the platform marks the site of the tron or weigh-beam. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
