Scope and Content Detail of painted ceiling in the 'Green Lady's Room', Crathes Castle, Aberdeenshire Crathes Castle lies c.3km east-north-east of Banchory. This large L-plan, four-storeyed tower-house was built for the Burnett family between 1553 and 1596. The east wing was added in the early 18th century and there were further additions in 1894. This detail is from the painted ceiling in the 'Green Lady's Room' (supposedly haunted by a green lady). Typical of the decoration for the home of a wealthy 16th-century baron, the paint was made from natural pigments such as red lead and blue azurite. The painted ceilings were covered up until the 19th century, when they were revealed and restored. In 1951 the castle was bequeathed to The National Trust for Scotland, who have carried out a great deal of restoration work on the castle and its grounds. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
