Scope and Content Detail of Stained Glass Window in South Transept, Crichton Memorial Church, Crichton Royal Hospital, Glencaple Road, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway This striking stained glass window, by the Glass Stainers Company, is in the north transept of the church. The work is possibly by Oscar Paterson, and shows stylised figures on either side of a central scene depicting the Risen Christ. The emphasis of the composition is on the leadlines, and drawing is entirely done in black and opalescent white with a minimal use of colour. Oscar Paterson (c.1862-c.1938) was born in Glasgow, and trained to become a glass stainer, opening his first studio in Glasgow in 1889. In 1893 he entered into partnership with Harry Thompson to form the Glass Stainers Company, and executed many church windows during the 1890s. However, it was his domestic designs which first brought his work to international attention in 1898 when the art magazine 'Studio' devoted space to his work. Paterson was creative and innovative, and used highly unusual colour schemes in his designs, the dominant and often only colours being lemon, yellow, orange, grey, black and opaque or opalescent white. In almost all his designs the drawing is done entirely by the leadlines, with light and shade being suggested by the juxtaposition of appropriate colours. Crichton Memorial Church, designed by the architect, Sydney Mitchell (1856-1930), was built in 1890-7 during a major period of development of the Crichton Royal Hospital (then the Crichton Royal Asylum for Lunatics) site. It stands at the heart of the complex of buildings, and is unquestionably the finest building within the grounds. It was designed to be used by all denominations and all classes of patients, and was built as a memorial to the asylum's founder and to celebrate the institution's 50th anniversary.
