Scope and Content Main entrance front of Newhailes House, East Lothian Originally named Whitehill, the centre block of Newhailes House was designed and built in 1686 by James Smith. The Dalrymple family bought and renamed it in 1709. Partially refurbished inside by William Adam c.1720, two projecting wings were added c.1760. The central block has seven bays, with the central three projecting under a triangular pediment. A double staircase leads to the front door, with wrought-iron balusters dating from c.1720. The later three-bayed wings mimic the style of the original block. In 1997, a £2.7m appeal was launched to prevent the dispersal of the contents of the house, and to restore it to its former glory. The interiors of Newhailes are splendid, with many rooms retaining their original decoration. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
