Scope and Content Hill-fort and Watch tower at Eildon Hill North, Scottish Borders This native hill-fort and Roman watch tower stand on the summit of Eildon Hill North. The fort is the largest in Scotland, and had at least three phases of occupation. All pre-date the Roman tower, which stands at the W end of the summit. This is an aerial view of the site. The ramparts and ditches of the native fort can be seen. The site of the Roman watch tower shows up as a circular ditch on the highest part of the hill. The tower itself was a rectangular, wooden structure. Some excavation has been done on the site. A number of hut circles were identified inside the fort. Some Roman material was also recovered. This included a tile which may have come from the wooden watch tower, or may represent a later, stone-built tower. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
