Scope and Content Roman fortlet at Oxton, Scottish Borders This Roman fortlet is at Oxton, built alongside a stretch of Dere Street, the main Roman road linking York to the North. The fort has several small annexes, and one very large one to the south-east. Most striking of all about the Roman fortlet at Oxton is the long rectangular enclosure. Its ditch is at least 3m wide and is 225m long, running parallel to the modern A68 road which follows the line of Dere Street. Following the Antonine reoccupation of Scotland, a comprehensive network of roads, forts and fortlets were established across lowland Scotland. Dere Street was the main eastern route into and through lowland Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
