Scope and Content Aerial photograph of 'Road Broch', Kirk Tofts, Caithness Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) excavated over 30 archaeological sites in Caithness between 1890 and 1906. When this site was excavated by Barry between 1893-5, he discovered a broch and various other smaller structures. This detailed aerial photograph shows the double walls of the circular broch, surrounded by other buildings and passages. The entrance to the broch, as well as two chambers within the broch wall, can be clearly seen. Sir Francis Tress Barry was MP for Windsor, Berkshire between 1890 and 1906. He had enjoyed a distinguished diplomatic and business career, and began to take an active interest in archaeology after his purchase of Keiss Castle, Caithness in 1890.
