Scope and Content Drawing of king-post base of roof-truss in casting-shop ('B') of Thistle Pottery (also known as Portobello or Waverley Pottery), Portobello, City of Edinburgh Thistle Pottery was founded around 1770 and owned by the Buchan family from 1867. In 1879 it was rebuilt and extended onto the site of an earlier pottery's harbour. In 1972, just before closure, it was making stoneware from Devon and Cornwall clay. The struts slot into the king post which, in turn, slots into the tie-beam. The base of the king-post swells out into a shoulder with slots for the slanting raking-struts. The base of the post has a plug or stub-tenon which slots into the tie-beam and is then anchored with iron stirrup-clasps (not shown). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
