Scope and Content Fort at Broomholm, Dumfries and Galloway This Roman fort is at the summit of Broomholm Knowe. It is now denuded, but excavation has shown it to have had at least two phases of occupation. The second fort was slightly smaller and occupied the S half of the original one. This is an aerial view of the site. The line of the defences and one corner of the fort can be seen as cropmarks. The fort had an annexe attached to the S side. Both structures were enclosed by two, and later four, ditches. The site has been excavated. As well as the two Roman forts, an enclosed prehistoric fort and a post-Roman round house were also found.
