Scope and Content Fort at Fendoch, Perth and Kinross This Roman fort is at Fendoch. Built on top of a small plateau, it guarded the route to the Highlands at the Sma' Glen. Reported in the 18th century, subsequent ploughing flattened the ramparts and the fort was forgotten until rediscovery in 1936. This is an aerial view of the site. The fort covers the area from the later ruin at the top of the picture to the point where the plateau begins to taper. The defences can still be seen as crop-marks. The entrance was on the left side. The site was excavated during the 1930s. Though little dateable evidence was found, the fort was built in the first century AD. When the fort was abandoned, the buildings were systematically dismantled, suggesting that this was a planned withdrawal. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
