Scope and Content Fort and temporary camps at Ardoch, Perth and Kinross This Roman fort and temporary camps are at Ardoch. The fort had several phases of occupation. Some of the camps are earlier than the fort, others later, reflecting the different Roman campaigns in Scotland. The fort is very well preserved. This is an aerial view of the site showing the fort. There were up to five outer ditches, and causeways were needed to cross them at the N and E gates. The remains represent the final phase of the fort's occupation. The site has been excavated and surveyed times. The first century fort was larger than the second century forts, and had timber buildings. The garrison included the cohors I Hispanorum, originally from Spain. The later forts had some stone buildings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
