Scope and Content View of east frontage of foundry at Rose Street, Inverness, Highland The capital of the Highlands, Inverness was created a royal burgh c.1130-53 by David I. The town has been a centre for many industries including malting, linen and wool manufacture, shipbuilding, brewing and distilling, and iron-founding. Built in 1893-5 to designs by the Inverness architects Ross & MacBeth, this foundry in Rose Street had an impressive stone frontage, with a three-arched and gabled entrance with semicircular windows within each of the gables. The Rose Street Engineering Foundry Company supplied rail- and locomotive-castings to the Highland Railway Company, and, during the two World Wars, produced marine engines and boom-defence equipment. It also developed specialised welding techniques. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
